FAQs

Braun Series 5 FAQs

What's the difference between foil and rotary shavers?
Rotary shavers are designed to work with cyclical movements while Braun foil shavers are designed to work with efficient sideways movements on the skin giving perfect control and precision. The foils protect the skin from irritation and are specifically designed to deliver the most thorough and comfortable shave from Braun.

What's the difference between the different Series 5 models?
The 5090cc model comes with high quality metal surfaces and has the most advanced display among Braun Series 5 shavers: a very precise 5 level battery status indicator with low charge warning as well as a travel lock and hygiene indicator. On top, the 5090cc features the advanced Intelligent Clean&Charge Station from Braun: it cleans, charges, lubricates and selects cleaning program at the touch of a button - so your shaver feels like new every day. For more information about the rest of the Series 5 range, please consult the Series 5 Model overview.

Why would I need a Clean&Charge Station when I can clean my Series 5 shaver under tap water?
Our tests show that cleaning your shaver with a Clean&Charge Station is significantly more hygienic than cleaning it under the tap. It's also more convenient: at the touch of a button your shaver is cleaned, charged and lubricated automatically.

I already have a Cleaning Center from my previous Braun shaver (Syncro, Activator, 360, etc.). Can I use it with the new Series 5 shaver?
No, the Series 5 marks the introduction of a new generation of shavers with fully revamped technology and can'’t be used with previous Cleaning Centers.

Can I buy a solo shaver and upgrade with a Clean&Charge Station later?
No, shaver and Clean&Charge Station are designed to interlink during the cleaning procedure. Shavers being sold without the Clean&Charge Station, don'’t have the technology to connect accordingly.

How often do I need to exchange the Clean&Charge refill cartridge?
If you clean your shaver with the Clean&Charge Station twice a week, you will only need to replace the refill cartridge every 2 to 3 months to experience a shaver like new, every day. The Save & Subscribe option from Amazon allows you to subscribe for a regular home delivery and at the same time save 10% on the price of the Clean&Charge refill. You don't have to think about it and always have a Clean&Charge refill available when you need it.

Do you have any recommendation on how to shave with an electric foil shaver?
We recommend that you shave before you take a shower. After a few days without shaving, for example over a weekend, you should trim your stubble before you shave. Stretch the skin and shave against the direction of beard growth. At all times, hold the shaver at right angles (90°) to your skin. In difficult to shave areas like under the nose you can also use the MultiHeadLock switch to lock the shaver head and manually set one of five available shaver head angles as it suits best to your needs. Keep the pressure even to achieve the most thorough and comfortable shave from Braun. To trim sideburns, moustache or beard, Series 5 features an integrated precision trimmer with superior cutting performance. In order to use this comfortable and precise tool, simply slide the trimmer upwards.

How often do I need to change the shaver head?
We recommend replacing all cutter parts every 18 months.

Does the battery have a memory effect as we know it from cell phones or laptops?
No, the Series 5 shavers use a Li-ion battery which has no memory effect. You can recharge it whenever you want and it has a low self-discharge rate (vs. NiMh batteries). Li-Ion batteries are therefore the most powerful and long-lasting batteries available for Braun shavers.

Braun 5040s - the best foil head shaver I've used

I was delighted that BzzAgent invited me to review the Braun 5040s. I normally use a similarly priced 3-head Philips clean and charge, duelled with a Gillette razor. Previous experiences with foil head shavers were years ago and disappointing. First impressions were of a sturdy premium product, and although a little heavy the Braun provided a comfortable and ergonomic grip. I was a little disappointed to see that the 5040s does not include the clean and charge station provided with the 5070cc model. The 5040s does include a plastic head cover, a soft travel case, a cleaning brush and of course a 2-pin charging lead. Once fully charged I put the 5040s to the test with a daily dry shave for the first week. I was pleasantly surprised by the closeness of the shave, the efficiency with which this was achieved, and with no skin irritation. The 3 cutting elements flex semi-independently of each other thanks to individual suspension and the entire head moves freely through 40 degrees when unlocked providing effortless contact with your skin. A foil head that gives at least as good a shave as a rotary head! The next challenge was 3 days growth after a weekend of DIY. This would normally be the time for a traditional wet shave with a razor as most electric shavers struggle with this amount of growth. The Braun 5040s gave a perfect shave with no hair pulling and only took a little longer than the normal daily shave. The trimmer is functional but as I only use it for side burns I didn't like the slight curve in the cutting head, requiring a little wrist movement to to complete the trim thus increasing the risk of a finish that is not straight. Maybe it offers improved functionality for beard trimming. For completeness I tried using the Braun for a wet shave with shaving gel. Whilst it did the job and provided the freshness of a wet shave with a razor, it was not as close a shave, felt awkward and took longer, with frequent pauses to wash the head. As this was my first wet shave with an electric shaver, maybe I just need to stick with it but frankly I don't see the point. When you have went to the trouble of lathering up I don't see why you wouldn't just finish the job with a good quality razor. Overall the Braun5040s is a quality product that gives excellent results, has superb battery life (easily exceeding the manufacturers claims), feels powerful and robust, and most importantly gives a good shave even with heavy growth. The only significant downside is the strong vibration due to the powerful cutting action, a problem not found in rotary shavers I've used. It leaves your hand a little tired and may be a deal breaker for some. I'll continue to dual between razor and electric shaver, and will continue with the Braun for now, but if I was buying I would opt for a model with a clean and charge base.

After receiving my free trial Braun Series 5 5040s Wet&Dry Shaver

After coming home from work on Friday, there waiting for me was my free trial Bzz campaign kit Braun Series 5 5040s Wet & Dry Shaver, it didn't take me long to open the box and put the shaver on charge. After an hour wait it was fully charge and zooming around my dry face attacking my 3 day old stubble. I was amazed I lost my yeti style growth in a matter of seconds. I have now used this Braun Series 5 5040s Wet & Dry Shaver, daily in the shower and on a dry face and have notice that I don't get the shave burn or irritated face, when using a razor or my normal Philips Wet and Dry shaver. I would normally shave every 3 days, as my face lights up if I would shave daily but with the Braun Series 5 5040s I haven’t had any problems so far......... what a great first campaign to start for BzzAgent and I looking forward to my next . 

no more fuzzz heres the bzzz

Never been a fan of electric razors. Tried a few over the years and always gone to wet shaving. Now the braun series 5 wet/dry has been upgraded and im testing it. Dry shave first with 3 days of stubble. No problems for the braun although it left me feeling like I needed to wet shave to finish off. Next time I tried it wet shaving with 1 days stubble. Now the braun steps up to the mark. The addition of a gel foam and this razor shapes up. Its designed well has a nice weight to it. The charge is ample for 3 days of shaves. I would like it to work on the charger lead but as a cordless its a strong contender on the market. For me to be able to wet shave with an electric razor tips the balance. Im giving it a thumbs up.

Closest Dry Shave Ever

Getting up early in the morning i like to save time before leaving for work, so using an electric razor has always appealed to me rather than the time consuming task of a wet shave, but by mid morning i have always felt like i haven't shaved at all, until now. The Braun 5040 series razor is simply the best electric razor i have ever used. The power of the motor gives me a really close shave on even tough areas such as my neck leaving no irritation. The head lock is a great function, keeping the blades locked in one position for easy use, while using the FlexMotion Tec gives as smooth glide over the contours of the face. Using a gel applied first to skin does not affect the performance as some other razors can tend to stick to the skin when wet. It keeps it's charge very well and also charges very quickly. It feels very comfortable in your hand and certainly doesn't feel like it could fall apart after a few uses. I have been using this daily and have felt no loss in performance. I love this razor and highly recommend this to any guy who needs to have faith in a piece of vital piece of equipment you use on a daily basis. Well done Braun.

its all about time

so for many years I have bee using a razor and I am quick with it, so when something comes along it takes a while to get used to before it gets used each day or left to rot in the top drawer. so now I have used the Series 5 shaver I have to say I like it, not love it but like. the love will be hard as I am so used to having a wet shave with a razor. over time this will win I guess due to the ease and overall cost. so I like the following lasts a long time between charges very quick to use can deal with thick heavy stubble or very iight light looks very cool. I will need to use if more before I write up a more detailed review listing all that is good and not. as it stands today I give it 7/10 which is much higher than other shavers I have used.

A worthwhile upgrade from the 340S

Having previously owned the Series 3 340S as my first electric shaver, I can honestly say that the 5040S is worth the extra money. The shaver has a more premium feel to it while the FlexMotionTec seems to give a better shave. The precision trimmer hasn't improved from the 340S and I don't think that this works particularly effectively. The 5040S also comes with a small bottle of oil for cleaning which was strangely omitted from the 340S. Overall a good electric shaver, although still not quite as close shave as a manual razor.

Excellent Shaver

Had this shaver for 4 days now and easy to set up, just plug in converter plug and left overnight to charge. Turned on the shaver and straight away could feel how close the shaver was cutting without irritating my skin and flowed easily over the contours of my skin all the way up to sideburns and under my nose. Used the trim cutter which is effective but hard to see as covered mainly by the shaver but did a good job. As per the easy instructions then washed the shaver which was quick and simple and a great benefit as cleans it quickly without messing around with the brushes. Overall a great close shave and better than my normal other brand. Very impressed

Amazingly close shave

For years I've been using a Gillette razor for a close shave. Got an electric razor a few years ago but that didn't seem to get close enough. All the changed when the Braun 5040s arrived on my door step. I'm very impressed and so is my wife who is not a fan of stubble lol. Wonderfully designed razor. Easy to use and clean. Again I'm very impressed

Braun 5040s vs Gillette

I used to own a electric razor around 5 years ago. A Philips model but one that couldn't be used in the shower, so the Braun 5040s shaver has a definite advantage. One of the reasons I went back to manual razors is the battery life on the Philips model was quite poor and although it was quick and easy to use, it just didn't do a very good job and left my skin quite dry and itchy. I liked the feel of the Braun. Quite sturdy and it felt a quality product and not one that will fall to pieces in a few weeks. Using it was quite easy and self explanatory. Mine did not come charged and as is standard, it came with a two pin plug which unfortunately I do not have in my house so I needed to purchase an adapter before I could use. To be scientific, I decided to test this product over a period of 2 weeks. On week 1, I grew my beard and used a manual razor (Gillette). On week 2, I grew it again and used the Braun 5040s and compared. In terms of a quality shave, the manual razor won. While the Braun did a good job, it just didn't feel as good as the manual shave. However, the Braun still did a very acceptable job. It was quiet and once I had fiddled around adjusting the head, it was comfortable to use. I also did not suffer any irritation around my skin which is a definite plus and huge improvement on my old razor. Cleaning it involved putting it under running water and leaving it to dry which was ideal. In terms of storage, I'd like some kind of holder to be included in the box. I ended up putting it inside the supplied soft cloth bag and in a cupboard in between uses. As it's designed to be used in the shower, some form of holder would have been ideal. Shaving for me is quite a spontaneous task and I prefer just to have the razor inside the shower rather than hop out into the cupboard to get it. As a minor point, I'd like a better battery indicator - one that provides more detailed use of how long the razor will last for. As I need to charge it in another room, I don't want to run out of power half way through a shave and not be able to finish off until it's charged again. Overall, I'm impressed with the Braun. It is quite expensive but I think you'd eventually make your money back as you don't need to keep buying expensive replacement blades for the manual razors. The quality of the shave was good and I think it's a product I'll be using in conjunction with my other manual razor rather than replace it altogether.

Design

Item has been bought as a Xmas gift but not in receipt of yet. The design tools ok albeit deceptive as the razor does seem to contain the external connectors to work with a clean and charge system. However the reality I am told is that it doesn't contain the right 'chip' set so you can't work / charge from a clean and charge system [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Yes, I recommend this product !
